Forest fires in Russian Federation

Lightning triggered dozens of forest fires in Siberia in late June, and may have burned 3000 hectares.

Over 600 firefighters have been working to contain and extinguish the fire. Reports indicate that at least eight firefighters aboard a cargo plane may have been killed when their plane crashed in the forest. The crash site was found on 3 July, along with eight bodies.

The fires are located in remote areas, and reportedly do not pose a threat to inhabited areas at this time, but a state of emergency has been declared in Kezhemskogo, Boguchansky, Evenki and Motyginsky districts.

These are not the first fires the area has experienced this year. Forest fires also occurred in the region in early June and May.
