日本（熊本）の地震

4月14日、マグニチュード6.2の地震が日本の南にある、熊本県東部を襲った。第一報によると、少なくとも9人の死者と250人以上の負傷者、また倒壊したビルの下敷きとなり、それ以上の人々が逃げ場を失っている可能性があることが確認されている。
 
この大きな揺れにより、建物が倒壊し、また停電が報じられた後、数千人の人々が家を離れ、安全な場所を求めて避難を余儀なくされた。救援活動、救助活動は、この地域を襲い続ける多くの余震により、影響を受けている。
 
マグニチュード6.2の揺れは極端なわけではないが、居住地域の下10kmという浅い場所での発生が大きな被害をもたらし、また、以降数日の間に複数回の余震が予想されている。
 
地震が海ではなく陸域で発生したため、津波警報は発令されておらず、国の原子力施設が影響を受けるかもしれないという不安はやわらげられている。
