The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was established in 1970, under the United States Department of Commerce. NOAA provides and ensures timely access to global environmental data and information services from satellites and other sources to promote, protect, and enhance the Nation's economy, security, environment, and quality of life. This mission includes the protection of life and property through improved prediction, preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation of natural and technological hazards.

NOAA operates two satellite programs, Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellites (POES) and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES). Data from these satellites and non-NOAA satellites are used to provide continuous operational products. Many of these products support management of disasters caused by tropical cyclones and other storms, floods, droughts, volcanic ash clouds as a hazard to aviation, fires, sea ice and icebergs as a hazard to navigation, coastal hazards, and solar storms. Non-NOAA satellites that NOAA utilizes include the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites, other geostationary satellites like NASA's QuikSCAT , Canadian Space Agency's RADARSAT-1 and -2, ESA's ERS-2 etc. NOAA also uses data from commercial satellites.
