Description of the Event

Record levels of rainfall over the weekend have caused floods in the Yamaguchi and Shimane Prefectures of Japan. At least one person has been reported killed, so far, and a number of other people are missing.

It was estimated that half of the average monthly rainfall fell over half of the day on Sunday, which the Japan Meteorological Agency has described as "unprecedented".

The River Abu burst its banks in the city of Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on Sunday afternoon, flooding nearby communities. The rainfall has also caused mudslides which have destroyed several homes.

Residents of the affected areas (an estimated total of 5000 people) have been advised to evacuate, and it is forecast that the storms will continue on Monday, leading to concerns of further floods and landslides.
