New look & feel for Charter Website

11 April 2008

Today the first phase of redesign activities on the Disasters Charter website has been completed. Graphical Design, Usability and Accessibility have been revised, resulting in a number of improvements for the benefit of the user.

Usability & Content
The static front-page has been replaced by a dynamic, news-driven one, featuring latest Charter activations & news, nevertheless retaining an introductory element on the Charter itself.

A new Charter Activation Map provides improved functionality on the geo-location of Charter events. The overall look & feel has been optimised with the help of a new stylesheet , providing a consistent overall graphical design with consolidated font sets, sizes & colours, also in Japanese.

Accessibility
The "graphic" main navigation buttons have been removed as a first step to make the website more screen-reader friendly.

Further Accessibility improvements include the main menu now highlighting the page currently visited, the split of functional navigation and main navigation, "Back to …" links on all third-level pages to ease navigation and a search box with an input field added to the front page.

Next steps
In a next step the Charter website will be migrated to a new technical platform for further improvements on Design, Content, Usability and Accessibility.
