Description of Event
Tropical cyclone Nargis hit the capital Yangon,
causing widespread devastation in the city and the surrounding areas.
Entire villages were submerged when the storm hit the
low-lying coastal delta, a heavily populated area.
By 12 May, the government of Myanmar announced a death toll of
31,938 people, with 29,770 missing. The UN estimates more than
62,000 dead.

7 May that did not significantly change from flood levels on 10 May 2008.

Damaged buildings have been identified with WorldView-1 satellite imagery acquired

Pre-cyclone Quickbird imagery in Google Earth from 12 Nov. 2003
was also used. Almost 100% of village buildings are either destroyed
or severely damaged.

Additionally, approximate areas of likely severe damage/destruction
have been classified on the map according to dominant building type.

RADARSAT-2 imagery was used to map water surfaces following Cyclone
Nargis. The flood layer is overlaid onto a SPOT-5 reference
image processed into natural colours. This image
acquired the 2nd of March 2008 is used to map the water
bodies visible before the arrival of the monsoon season.
