Description of Event

Tropical cyclone Nargis hit the capital Yangon, causing widespread devastation in the city and the surrounding areas. Entire villages were submerged when the storm hit the low-lying coastal delta, a heavily populated area. By 7 May, the government of Myanmar announced a death toll of some 20,500 people, with 41,000 missing and one million homeless.
