Description of Event

An earthquake of intensity IV to VII on the Mercalli scale occurred in Region XI, southern Chile. The area has been hit by shocks increasing in intensity since February, with a 6.2 magnitude quake causing landslides and coastal waves of 8 meters in height in the Aisén fjord in 21 April. Ten people were swept out to sea. Rescuers recovered three bodies and continued the search for the missing. The Chilean Ministry of the Interior announced that the area around Aisén would be monitored as seismic activity appears to be continuing.
