Description of Event

An Earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck in a densely populated area of the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, at 3:49 GMT (10:49 local time) on 5^th March 2007. The epicentre was located north-west of Padang. This earthquake was classified as a GDACS (Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System) Red Alert. In the first hours following the disaster the media reported 70 dead and numerous wounded.
