Cyclone in Myanmar
Tropical cyclone Nargis hit the capital Yangon, causing widespread devastation in the city and the surrounding areas. Entire villages were submerged when the storm hit the low-lying coastal delta, a heavily populated area. By 7 May, the government of Myanmar announced a death toll of some 20,500 people, with 41,000 missing and one million homeless.

A high level of seismicity took place across the Aysén region in southern Chile, followed by the eruption of a volcano. Hundreds of people were evacuated from the town of Chaitén due to ashfall.

Fires in Argentina
Grassland fires in the Paraná Delta region burned for several days, affecting air and road traffic. Smoke also obscured the cities of Buenos Aires and Montevideo.

Flooding in the United States
Record flooding struck over 250 communities in the states of Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, and Texas. The death toll had reached 15 by 21 March.

Flooding in Namibia and Angola
A severe flood, which started at the end of January, reached its peak around mid-March. The Namibian government declared a state of emergency on 5 March. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), southern Angola and northern Namibia will continue to experience heavy rains over the next few days. On 19 March 2008, the disaster area was extended to cover neighbouring Angola, also badly affected by flooding.
